High-pressure fuel pump for diesel engine-operating principle, malfunctions, repairs

Main / Useful information / High-pressure fuel pump for diesel engine-operating principle, malfunctions, repairs

Fuel high-pressure pump (abbreviated as the injection pump) is the major structural element of the internal combustion engine. The diesel pump has a slightly different operating principle compared to gasoline pumps.

The key feature of the fuel pump in diesel vehicles is to create a pressure difference between the main fuel line and the compression chambers. Fuel pumps provide optimal fuel injection under the required pressure into the combustion chamber.

In addition, the fuel pump plays the role of a distribution element by controlling the sequential supply of diesel fuel to the working injectors. Also, high-pressure pumps are responsible for the volume of fuel supply, depending on the dynamics of movement, engine temperature and many other parameters. Fuel injection pumps are of the distribution type and in-line type in their design.

Like any other elements of the car, high-pressure pumps are prone to periodic breakdowns, which can be triggered by poor fuel, high loads or banal wear of structural elements.

As a rule, the operation of a faulty fuel pump leads to more serious engine failures, poor driving and increased fuel consumption. For the vehicle to work properly, it is necessary to conduct regular diagnostics, maintenance and timely repair of the fuel pump by specialists.
